Welcome to Chemistry 1 (821)
Students interested in attending the Broad Institute Field trip on February 7/8 must complete the following form by Wednesday, January 18, 2012. Follow the link below to complete the form:

About Cornerstone Activities
Cornerstone Activities are educational units that are common to all classes
of the same course. For example, all students enrolled in Chemistry 1 (821)
will perform the cornerstone laboratory unit on determining the molar volume
of hydrogen gas. This means that every Chemistry 1 teacher will ensure that
every Chemistry 1 student performs this same laboratory experiment. Cornerstone
Activities are designed to ensure that key concepts and essential components
of a course of study are common experiences for all students within a study
curriculum.
Cornerstone Activities in the Course Outline
The Course Outline gives a sequenced list by term of
cornerstone activities selected for the current academic year. This outline
is only a guideline that details the material each Chemistry 1 teacher hopes
to cover over the course of the year. The outline is not a day, week, or monthly
planner of what is scheduled for all classes. Indeed, each teacher will cover
the material on the outline according to his or her personal teaching style,
thus students should not expect that all classes will perform each Cornerstone
Activity on the same day each term. Generally speaking, each teacher writes
and grades assignments given to their own classes (including quizzes and exams).
The exception to this is the final exam, which is a composite effort of the
entire chemistry faculty involved with a particular course.

Cornerstone Activity Handouts
Cornerstone Activity Handouts are written in accord
with a common format to give them all a similar layout and appearance. This
make it easier for students to follow, as students will develop expectations
for what each Cornerstone Activity will entail. Since all activities do not
require all components of the handout format, modifications are made as needed.
Usually modifications mean certain sections are either combined, or sections
may be absent. The Components
of a Cornerstone Activity Handout is available in the format of a handout.
Under each section is a description of what will usually be found in that section.
All handouts for cornerstone activities will be
available on this website. At the appropriate time, students will be asked to
access the website to read and print copy of each cornerstone activity handout.
Students are encouraged to wait until instructed to print off their copy
of each handout so as to ensure that each student has the most current version
of every handout.
Safety in the Laboratory
Laboratory
Safety Agreement. All students and their legal guardians
must read and sign the Safety Agreement before engaging in laboratory experiments
involving chemical reagents.
If you find a "broken" link that you think should be working, please
send email to Alan Crosby with
the details.
